Noran?the New?

I’ve been in a bit of a funk concerning real-time strategy games. I think most of my peers might call it 'burnt out.' My daughter might call it 'bored.' All the same, I just haven’t been playing them as much. Back when the genre was starting to gather steam, I couldn’t stop playing them. An evening with Warcraft II was pure nirvana and as for Command and Conquer: Red Alert, oh my! However, after playing through Warcraft III a couple of years ago, I dropped the genre like a bag of gold at the stronghold. I have, of course, piddled with RTS games in the last few years, and I even replayed Warcraft III, but not a single RTS has kept my interest long enough for me to actually finish it. Well, there was that spat of Rise of Nations online…

Anyhow, I’ve recently started feeling as if I needed a new RTS in my life. I was thinking of picking up Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War, or maybe even Command & Conquer: Generals, but lo and behold, Armies of Exigo arrived at my doorstep, practically begging to be played. I had read about it already, but it had sounded very generic to me—three sides to the conflict, standard fantasy setting—but the box art was good and I was panging to push peasants around, so I welcomed myself to the game’s world of Noran.

Noran is the fantasy world on which Armies of Exigo takes place. The plot in Armies of Exigo borrows much from the three-sided plots of both StarCraft and WarCraft. The story, beautifully presented through both CG cinematics and in-game cut scenes, begins with the humans of the Empire fending off an invasion from the Beast armies. On top of this, the crazy hive-minded Fallen simply want to take over the world, which is unfortunate considering the developing conflict between the Empire and Beast armies. While there are no standout characters or plot developments, the storyline was interesting enough for me to keep playing, although I must admit I’ve not yet finished the entire campaign—I’m still stuck on one of the middle Fallen missions, which is quite tough.

Relocation

Fitting all those knights and peasants and witches onto my hard drive was very simple and trouble free. My wee people fled from each of the two discs and in no time, I was ready to play. In addition, I haven’t encountered a single crash, bug or freeze since I began playing, although the game left about a 1.5GB footprint on my hard drive.

Learning to Fly

The manual, while perilously thin, is nearly bursting with information, including historical information for each of the three playable sides, general game information, unit details, a list of hotkeys and even a page of hints and tips. Also included is a handy foldout sheet featuring the tech trees for each of the three sides. The in-game tutorial scenario, while standard for the genre, is also quite helpful and players both new to the genre or veterans of the Command & Conquer wars will quickly feel right at home.

Sights and Sounds of Noran

I really like my real-time strategy games to get me into the action with a bang. I like explosions, blood, vicious swings and bites, lots of voices, footprints in the snow, changing weather, clanging swords, lumbering catapult creaks and more. I wouldn’t call myself a graphics whore, but it does help liven up the gameplay if the world looks and sounds great.
